Cooking = Scary Stuff

Brewed on June 10th, 2008 by Troy Meyer

In about a month I will be moving out into the unknown, into my first condo. There are a whole lot of things that will change at this time, but the scariest of all of them is that I will have to cook for myself — and survive what I cook for myself.

Luckily, Dave Navarro (@davenavarro) of Rock Your Day just posted a tweet about Sushi Day, a blog that posts sushi recipes.

This week’s featured recipe over at Sushi Day is the Crazy California Roll. Looks like fun to make, and I love sushi! Let’s just hope I have better luck than Allison (@sushiday) when I set to make myself some Crazy California rolls. :D

Does anyone know of some good blogs/sites where there are easy, classy recipes for a young bachelor such as myself to take a stab at? (The pun is absolutely intended!)

Start Planning Actions

Brewed on May 21st, 2008 by Troy Meyer

One of the biggest mistakes we make as humans in decision making is that we try to plan the results of our actions, and oftentimes we avoid any action at all for fear that some undesirable result will come to pass.

Right now in my life I have made the decision to undertake something important and I am not sure what the outcome will be. I am putting a lot on the line to take this course of action and I have no way to know or control the outcome. It scares me to death! But that’s really all I can plan for, just the step that I will take.

The Problem With Human Plans

The funny thing about planning is that it doesn’t guarantee success or the lack of pain. We think that if we plan and research diligently enough we can avoid pain or mistakes or outright failure. The problem is that most of us see planning as a set of results; the outcome of the actions we take rather than the actions themselves.

You cannot plan an outcome. The outcomes or consequences of every action you take are determined by millions of external factors that you cannot even remotely hope to control or even have any knowledge of in most cases. We are just human, and we can only take responsibility for our own actions. Only God could use all of the factors, hidden and seen, to plan an actual result. As humans, we are relegated to looking only steps ahead of ourselves and moving forward with the information and insight that we have access to. (more…)

On The Love Of Words

Brewed on April 25th, 2008 by Troy Meyer

I feel as if I’m now on the cusp of something big. As if all my life this great focus or achievement has been building up as I was busy elsewhere.

When I returned, there it was, looking no different that it had before, although it now seems so much more attractive and exciting.

The world seems somehow fresh now, waiting to be explored and documented. Whether it’s by fountain pen and Moleskine or computer and Internet access, it cries out, waiting for someone to make it concrete.

I am still waiting on some inspiration for my first mass-marketed literary achievement. I’m sure that somewhere down the line the first will seem very trivial and I’ll have a good laugh at it. But right now it seems like the first rough stepping-stone towards highways paved with marble.

Now I’m excited. O words, how you do get me going.

My Passion in Possessions

Brewed on April 23rd, 2008 by Troy Meyer

In my ongoing search to find my passion I had an interesting thought:

“Maybe my passion is found in the possessions I have surrounded myself with.”

We all surround ourselves with people that interest us and mean something to us and it is the same with possessions. We accumulate over our life-span items we enjoy looking at, using and items that have some meaning to us. I can separate the possessions I see from where I sit into three categories; Personal, Entertainment and Creative. (more…)

Life Like A Highway

Brewed on April 18th, 2008 by Troy Meyer

Life is like driving a highway.

You won’t see the “Welcome” sign of your destination without first seeing many other signs with absolutely no mention of your destination.
